Amazon’s ad business gains are dwarfed by tariffs, AI spending

Article
Aug 01, 2025

The news: Amazon reported strong Q2 results for its advertising business, with advertising revenues reaching $15.6 billion—up a significant 23% YoY. Net sales increased 13% YoY to $167.7 billion, well above Q2 guidance that warned of “tariffs and trade policies” and “recessionary fears.” Our take: Moving forward, Amazon will need to innovate what it’s already offering by pioneering a retail media strategy that extends Amazon’s data and ad tech beyond its own storefront, AI-driven tools that simplify creative production and optimization at scale while prioritizing privacy, and more immersive and shoppable ad formats in its streaming offering.

The paywall barrier: Why most US consumers don’t pay for news

Article
Aug 01, 2025

The news: Few US adults pay for news behind paywalls. A June 2025 Pew Research Center survey shows just 17% paid for any news last year. The vast majority (83%) avoid payment, citing the abundance of free alternatives. Our take: Advertising tied to paywalls narrows reach and shrinks scale. Brands should prioritize open, ad-supported platforms where audiences engage freely. Marketers who embrace paywall resistance—focusing on easy access and relevant content—will win attention and revenues in a fragmented media landscape. Those relying on strict gating risk losing audience share and diminishing ad impact as consumers stick to free, accessible alternatives.

Amazon–Google rivalry heats up as Amazon reins in AI agents and drops Google Shopping ads

Amazon–Google rivalry heats up as Amazon reins in AI agents and drops Google Shopping ads

Article
Jul 30, 2025

The situation: Amazon and Google, once bound by a symbiotic relationship in which Amazon funneled ad dollars into Google Search and Google indexed Amazon’s pages, are now veering toward open conflict as generative AI (genAI) blurs the lines between ecommerce, advertising, and search. Both companies are determined to own the entire journey from discovery to checkout, and that ambition is unraveling what remains of their former détente. Our take: Amazon and Google are racing to define where and how consumers discover and buy products in the genAI era. If Amazon succeeds in walling off its marketplace data and steering shoppers to its own AI interfaces, the retail landscape could splinter into walled gardens where tech giants cooperate far less. That winner‑takes‑all dynamic might suit the victors, but it risks degrading the overall consumer experience with fewer choices and less transparent pricing. At the same time, it could lead brands and retailers into a margin‑sapping race to the bottom inside whichever closed ecosystem proves most dominant.

Lloyds’ new genAI could supercharge the customer experience

Article
Jul 18, 2025

The news: Lloyds has launched an internal genAI -powered knowledge hub, Athena, to help customer-facing employees sift through banking and customer information faster—empowering more personalized and helpful experiences, per PYMNTS. Our take: We’ve recommended that banks focus on implementing genAI-powered solutions that free up their employees’ time so they can manage the human-centric, complex tasks for which customers turn to them. Athena does this and also has the potential to supercharge the human-centricity in customer service by empowering employees with more relevant information. The customer experience is one of the biggest drivers of customer attrition, and Athena represents a strategic step for Lloyds to enhance efficiency while preserving, and potentially elevating, the personalized and empathetic service that fosters customer loyalty and reduces churn.

Nearly 40% of video ads will use genAI by 2026, says IAB

Nearly 40% of video ads will use genAI by 2026, says IAB

Article
Jul 15, 2025

Generative AI is playing a growing role in video advertising, with 22% of all video ad creative enhanced by genAI in 2024—a figure set to reach 39% by 2026, per IAB. Smaller advertisers are leading the way, using genAI to scale affordable, personalized content. Major platforms like Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Amazon are fueling adoption with built-in tools that boost ROAS and compress production timelines. While creative speed and flexibility are increasing, many marketers still face hurdles around measurement and platform-level data transparency. As capabilities improve, genAI is transforming video from a production bottleneck into a performance engine.

Google’s Gemini goes global as Samsung’s AI engine for phones and wearables

Article
Jul 10, 2025

The news: Samsung leaned heavily on AI functionality at its Unpacked event Wednesday with the Galaxy S25 series, Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 smartphones and Galaxy Watch 8, all featuring enhanced AI capabilities as a core value proposition, per Android Central. Samsung highlighted proprietary Galaxy AI for tasks like on-device photo and video editing, but the bigger news was Samsung’s adoption of Google Gemini across its ecosystem. Our take: For advertisers, the shift toward screen-aware, voice-activated experiences requires them to rethink how brands and campaigns align in an AI-first mobile world. Reframing brand experiences around mobile, voice, and contextual AI features opens opportunities for user engagement.

YouTube’s new rules favor original creators over AI-generated filler

YouTube’s new rules favor original creators over AI-generated filler

Article
Jul 10, 2025

YouTube is taking aim at AI-generated "slop" by revising its monetization rules on July 15, drawing a line between authentic content and spammy filler. The update targets low-effort uploads—like synthetic voiceovers over stock footage or AI-mimicked news—but exempts legitimate formats like reaction videos. The shift comes amid growing concern over AI-generated clutter, scams, and identity fakes, as seen in platforms from Spotify to Pinterest. With content volume soaring and faceless creators rising, YouTube’s move reflects a growing push to safeguard viewer trust and advertiser confidence. The platform now faces the challenge of enforcement while reinforcing that originality still matters.

Prime Day marks turning point in AI-driven shopping

Prime Day marks turning point in AI-driven shopping

Article
Jul 09, 2025

The news: Generative AI (genAI) is expected to play a bigger role than ever in ecommerce during Amazon’s Prime Day event this week. Adobe predicts that genAI-driven traffic will surge 3,200% YoY as more consumers use AI for searching for products, price matching, and purchasing decisions. Our take: While still trailing traditional channels like paid search and email, AI is winning consumer trust and influencing higher-consideration purchases. Marketers that can tailor shopping content around AI search could help their clients gain visibility. Structure product data, promotions, and sales content for AI interfaces like chatbots, shopping agents, and search for more conversational browsing with a higher conversion rate.

AI becomes a trusted retail guide as shoppers seek personalization

Article
Jul 02, 2025

The news: Consumers increasingly trust shopping suggestions from AI, even more than product suggestions from content creators, positioning the technology as a trusted and personalized guide rather than a back-end tool. 27% of US consumers trust AI shopping recommendations, per Walmart’s Retail Rewired Report, compared with 24% who trust suggestions from social media influencers. Our take: AI retail tools are most likely to succeed if they offer both speed and a sense of user control. Retailers should let users set spending caps and offer options to pause or customize recommendations to help AI agents feel more like a trusted assistant than a pushy salesperson.

Robots may outnumber humans on Amazon's warehouse floors in the not-too-distant future

Robots may outnumber humans on Amazon's warehouse floors in the not-too-distant future

Article
Jul 01, 2025

The milestone: Amazon recently deployed its 1 millionth robot in its fulfillment centers—a figure approaching the number of human workers at those facilities. Our take: Automation is a central element within Amazon’s relentless push to narrow the gap between click and doorstep. Fast delivery isn’t just about convenience; it transforms how consumers shop. The faster Amazon gets everyday essentials like toothpaste into customers’ hands—especially with free delivery for Prime members—the harder it becomes for other retailers to compete. That gives Amazon a durable edge as it looks to expand its share of US ecommerce sales.

AI boosts code speed and quality, yet doubts persist

Article
Jun 30, 2025

The news: While major companies are picking up generative AI (genAI) for coding, many developers remain skeptical about using it without human oversight. Three-quarters (78%) said AI tools have made them more productive, but a similar share (76%) don’t entirely trust AI-generated code, per Qodo’s The State of AI Code Quality report. Our take: Remaining skepticism from developers—one of the professions closest to AI—shows that companies use genAI as a support tool and co-pilot rather than a replacement for human judgment. Training employees on AI’s weaknesses and requiring review can help reduce errors.

AI shopping gains steam, but trust is divided

Article
Jun 30, 2025

The news: US shopper interest in generative AI (genAI) assistants has spiked 223% between 2023 and 2025, per Chain Store Age. 69% of US consumers surveyed by CouponFollow have used AI assistants for shopping. Our take: Retail AI strategies must match their audiences. Those geared toward younger consumers should highlight AI use and innovation and even let AI guide purchases. For older consumers, focus on AI to inform, not take control.

Meta’s voice push boosts ad tools but risks misuse and backlash

Article
Jun 27, 2025

The news: In a bid to push deeper into creative ad tools, Meta is in talks to acquire Play AI, a voice cloning startup, per Bloomberg. According to sources, Meta is interested in the startup’s tech and key staff and is looking to integrate its voice features into customer service and content creation applications. Key takeaway: Creators and brands should treat AI voice tools as a way to enhance, not replace, creative work. They should use voice tools judiciously for fast testing or global reach. The goal isn’t to mimic people—it’s to scale content responsibly.

OpenAI explores office software market as ChatGPT gains business traction

Article
Jun 25, 2025

The news: OpenAI is working on an enterprise product that would rival both Microsoft 365 and Google Workplace, per The Information. The features would allow user collaboration within documents and chat capabilities among co-workers, according to two sources. Our take: OpenAI has the potential to be an all-in-one solution if it could use its interface as a document creator and data storage solution, but Microsoft’s and Google’s brand recognition in that space is likely to keep ChatGPT enterprise solutions on the sidelines—for now.
