YouTube TV loses access to Univision, strikes precarious deal with NBCU

The news: YouTube TV is in a dicey position after it lost access to Univision networks and reached a temporary extension with NBCUniversal to avoid the same fate.

  • The announcements came after previous deals ended on September 30. Google stated that if TelevisaUnivision’s programming remains inaccessible to YouTube TV subscribers, the company will offer a $6 credit or refund. Google is similarly offering a $10 credit in the event NBCU programming goes dark.
  • DVR recordings of Univision networks have also been removed, while TelevisaUnivision stated that Google’s actions are “tone-deaf and egregious” for “stripping Hispanic viewers of the Spanish-language [content] they rely on every day.”

What’s at stake: The dispute threatens not just YouTube TV’s content lineup but also Univision and Telemundo’s access to a critical growth market.
