The news: The New York Times is looking to buy social networking and film-cataloging platform Letterboxd, giving the publisher access to a young, highly engaged community that traditional news products are struggling to attract.
The deal, which would involve The Times integrating its ad tech into Letterboxd while letting the platform operate independently, is worth approximately $300 million, The Times reported.
More than half of Letterboxd’s users are under 35, per TIME, and its user base passed 28 million in April 2026, up from 3 million in January 2021. The platform is projecting $15 million in earnings in 2026, stemming from its paid memberships and transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) movie rental service.
The bigger picture: Traditional publishers like The Times are losing traffic to AI search tools just as younger consumers lean toward social media for information—only 27% of US adults often get their news from news websites and apps, per Pew Research Center, and 39% of those ages 18 to 29 regularly get their news from TikTok.
The story also mirrors Reddit’s, which is trying to monetize niche groups that offer valuable ad context.
However, trying to turn community-focused apps into premium ad environments risks undermining the authenticity that made those platforms attractive and valuable in the first place. Letterboxd’s user pitch depends on independent recommendations, word-of-mouth discovery, and authentic discussion. An influx of ads or intrusive placements could weaken that trust.
Implications for marketers: The Times deal would extend its ad capabilities into a highly engaged community, offering opportunities for contextual advertising around film and entertainment interests.
Marketers should approach environments like Letterboxd and Reddit as community networks first and ad channels second. Maintaining a clear line between paid promotions and organic recommendations, while focusing on placements that complement user activity, will be crucial to preserving platform trust and engagement.
