The news: Anthropic is expanding Claude's financial services capabilities into everyday personal finance.
The Personal Finance tool connects bank and credit card accounts through Plaid, per a press release. This lets users:
The tool is rolling out in beta to paid US subscribers. Access is read-only, meaning Claude cannot move money, execute transactions, or make investments.
Zooming out: The launch builds on Anthropic's earlier push into wealth management; it introduced Claude for Financial Advisors in September to help professionals analyze portfolios, manage risks, and serve more clients.
OpenAI introduced similar personal finance capabilities in ChatGPT in May.
Why it matters: AI companies are positioning themselves as consumers' financial partners, which could weaken banks’ relationships with customers—and their ability to cross-sell other products.
Unlike individual banking apps, which focus on accounts held at one institution, AI platforms can link across institutions—giving them more data to understand spending, identify unnecessary expenses, and recommend financial decisions.
And while Claude cannot act on consumers' behalf, it doesn't need transactional capabilities to compete for their attention. It will, however, need to win over their trust: 72% of US banking consumers are concerned about sharing financial information with generative AI tools, per Deloitte, while 64% worry about biased recommendations.
Recommendations for banks: Banks need to strengthen their role as trusted financial partners before third-party AI platforms become consumers' go-to source for banking guidance.
Banks should use this window to build more proactive, personalized financial guidance into their digital experiences. Helping customers identify unnecessary expenses, manage debt, and build savings could improve their financial health while giving them more reasons to engage with their bank.
