YouTube microdrama views top 6.5 billion as creators gain new revenue options

The news: YouTube is creating new monetization options for microdrama creators as viewership of the narrative short video format grows. The company announced that it will streamline mobile access to paid, members-only microdrama episodes, giving creators a new way to monetize their series.

The update works by allowing viewers to watch a few microdrama episodes for free, while remaining episodes are placed behind a paid membership. Creators can also monetize their series with YouTube’s in-feed ads.

YouTube also noted that microdrama viewership surpassed more than 6.5 billion in the first half of 2026 and highlighted that watch time grew over 50% YoY in this period, while microdrama-related views grew more than 70% YoY in markets across APAC.

Why it matters: Beyond unlocking new monetization pathways for creators, YouTube’s update could give marketers more opportunities to reach audiences through creator partnerships in a format gaining rapid popularity.

  • 42% of US daily social media users watch short dramas daily, per Ipsos data commissioned by Snap. Seventy-one percent of those viewers only started watching short dramas in the past year; 83% intend to watch in the future.
  • Of those who have watched short dramas for at least a year, 61% said they watch more now than they did a year ago.

The hurdles: Partnerships within paid, members-only microdramas could be valuable as viewers who pay to access a series may be more invested in its ongoing storylines. But the new feature could also have a negative impact on marketers as it’s likely to significantly reduce audience exposure to microdramas, which have largely grown because of their accessibility within existing discovery methods.

Another question is whether or not viewers will actually be willing to pay to view content. With consumers already experiencing high subscription fatigue and churn behaviors rising, microdrama subscriptions might not be a top priority—even for those invested in microdramas and creators.

Recommendations for marketers:

  • Focus on partnerships with microdrama creators who have established and loyal followings. This will become especially important as some episodes move behind paid memberships, potentially limiting access to more casual viewers. Marketers should prioritize creators whose storylines, audiences, and tone align with the brand and ensure integrations feel natural to viewers who are invested in continuing the series.
  • Build integrations like product placements into the storyline. Products should fit naturally into the series to promote repeat brand exposure without interrupting the viewing experience.
  • Look beyond engagement to assess microdrama effectiveness. The format is still relatively new in comparison with other digital video types. Determine whether repeat exposure via microdrama creator partnerships boosts metrics like consideration, brand recall, or conversions.
