Taco Bell’s loyalty program helps speed its post-outbreak recovery

The news: Taco Bell’s business is recovering after the cyclospora outbreak drove diners away in the previous two quarters, executives said.

While same-store sales fell 4% YoY in Q3 2026, the chain has since outperformed the rest of the quick-service restaurant (QSR) industry. Same-store sales in the four weeks ended October 30 were up 3% YoY and are up around 1% quarter-to-date, Yum Brands CFO Ranjith Roy said on the company’s earnings call.

How we got here: Taco Bell is leaning into its usual playbook of value deals, menu innovation, and high-profile marketing campaigns featuring celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and Kevin Hart to win back customers as food safety fears fade.

Its decision to offer steep discounts to loyalty members during the height of the outbreak has helped reduce churn: Loyalty users returned to Taco Bell twice as fast as nonmembers, CEO Chris Turner said. At the same time, “heavy” users have resumed their pre-outbreak visit cadence, while traffic from “medium and light users” is roughly 95% of what it was previously, underscoring the importance of loyalty initiatives in driving engagement and repeat visits.

Rising gas prices may also be working in Taco Bell’s favor. As Turner pointed out, the pressure on household budgets is making the chain’s value proposition even more attractive relative to peers, helping to hasten its post-cyclospora recovery.

Implications for restaurant spending: Taco Bell’s recovery shows that despite lingering concerns over food safety, value remains paramount for diners. Price and value are by far the most important considerations among parents when choosing a QSR, according to an EMARKETER and Dick’s Sporting Goods survey.

Beyond that, the chain’s ability to move past the cyclospora outbreak shows the importance of having a strong loyalty program as well as affordable—and craveable—menu items that can’t be obtained elsewhere.
