The data: 89% of millennial parents who use AI for health also use it for their children's health, according to a July Talker Research survey for MD Live Evernorth. They turn to AI for questions about their children’s diet and sleep (32%), symptoms (29%), health conditions (29%), and medications (28%).
Why it matters: AI is influencing how millennial parents respond to their children’s health concerns. Among millennial parents who use AI for their children’s care, 58% say they have acted on AI-generated advice for their children without first confirming the guidance with a healthcare provider, per Talker.
This reflects a broader shift in how millennials use AI for health. Sixty-three percent turn to AI for their health support before seeking professional medical care, per an Aflac survey of 2,000 adults in March.
AI is also shaping care-seeking decisions: 24% of millennial parents who use AI for health rely on it to determine whether their child needs professional care. For parents who lean on AI, its responses may influence their decisions about seeking medical attention.
Implications for healthcare marketers: As millennial parents turn to AI for their children’s health questions and care decisions, relying too heavily on AI’s convenience carries risks, particularly without clinician oversight. Healthcare systems can integrate AI-powered tools that help millennial parents find reliable information about their children's symptoms, medications, and when to seek medical care. To stand out from general-purpose AI chatbots, these tools could let parents opt in for guidance tailored to their child's medical history, while offering direct access to their care teams, nurse messaging, and appointment scheduling.
Patient portals may be a natural starting point. Adults in their 30s and 40s, largely millennials, are among the most frequent users of patient portals. Adding AI features to existing portals could give parents one convenient place to get health guidance alongside their child's medical records and care information.
