Susceptibility Rate and Median Loss to Scams Among Consumers in North America, by Age, 2017

Methodology

Data is from the March 2018 Better Business Bureau (BBB) Institute for Marketplace Trust "2017 BBB Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report: New Trends in Scam Risk." More than 47,000 scam reports submitted to the BBB Scam Tracker were analyzed in 2017. The reports were received from both businesses and individuals in North America, representing a cross-section of the population. Reports were classified into 30 scam types. Data collected included description of the scam, the dollar value of any loss and information about the method of contact and means of payment. The age, gender and postal code of the victim or target were also collected along with military (active duty, veteran or spouse) and student status. Better Business Bureau is a nonprofit organization for advancing consumer protection and trust.
