Share of Payments Made in Cash by US Adults, by Age, 2016-2021 (% of total in each group)
Methodology
Data is from a May 2022 report from Federal Reserve Banks titled “2022 Findings from the Diary of Consumer Payment Choice.” The Diary was developed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s Consumer Payment Research Center and is managed by the Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The Diary collects data about shopping and payment behavior from a nationally representative sample of consumers administered by the University of Southern California (USC) Dornside Center for Economic and Social Research via the Understanding America Study panel of households which includes approximately 9,000 US respondents, of which, 4,674 completed the 2021 Diary during September-November 2021. Responses were weighted to match national population estimates based on the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey to ensure a nationally representative sample.
