TikTok Shop opens discovery doors for SMBs

The news: TikTok is proving to be a valuable asset for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), helping them appear in social discovery and hook cold audiences.

  • Nearly three-quarters (72%) of brands found by TikTok Shop users over the past year were small businesses, per a GlobalData survey commissioned by TikTok.
  • Searches for “small business” grew 479% in Q1 2026, and 89% of SMBs have seen sales increase after advertising on TikTok.

Zooming out: Social serves as the No. 1 traffic source for SMBs, per WordStream by LocaliQ, ahead of organic search. This highlights how companies with limited budgets, small marketing teams, and potentially no website can leverage social networks like TikTok to drive brand discovery in high-intent moments.

This trend isn’t limited to TikTok: 96% of top searches on Pinterest are unbranded, offering ample opportunities for smaller or less-established brands to get their products into curious users’ minds.

The opportunity: TikTok Shop users are discovering small businesses at scale, which means challenger brands can intercept demand without legacy awareness, retail shelf space, or big media budgets.

The fact that consumers are intentionally searching for smaller brands means they may be looking for products that feel more authentic or differentiated amid growing fatigue with mass-market brands and fast fashion. Highlighting ethical manufacturing conditions, community-driven operations, or brand mission statements could help companies stand out even more.

Implications for the industry: Although selling and promoting on TikTok Shop can present hurdles, like the need to constantly make new content and monitor trend cycles, TikTok is strengthening its case as a commerce media platform by tying discovery, promotion, and sales into a single ecosystem. That challenges Amazon, Etsy, Instagram, and retail media networks by compressing the path from inspiration to purchase.
