Netflix expands pause ads as the CTV format enters its next test

The news: Netflix announced that pause ads will be available programmatically across the UK and wider EMEA region beginning next month at its first ever UK Upfront.

The ads will be available across partner DSPs; Netflix is also expanding demographic targeting capabilities to reach consumers based on household composition and income.

Why it matters: Making pause ads programmatic will make the format much more scalable, giving marketers the ability to reach larger audiences at a time when the format is in high demand.

What to look out for: Pause ads are promising strong performance for their less intrusive nature. But pause ads are gaining popularity with marketers rapidly—and that fast growth could mean viewers eventually tire of the format.

Competition and clutter will likely begin to mount as more advertisers adopt pause ads, which will potentially reduce novelty and tolerance. And even though the format benefits from its longer dwell time, excessive, poorly managed exposure could lead to the same ad fatigue that other CTV ad formats suffer from.

Recommendations for marketers: The current effectiveness of pause ads makes them appealing, but their rapid expansion could create new challenges around clutter and fatigue. Marketers should plan for that possibility as more pause ads populate TV screens.

  • Prioritize regularly refreshed creative to sustain engagement. Repeated exposure to the exact same pause ad is likely to increase fatigue and lead to negative brand associations, making creative rotation important as campaigns run.
  • Monitor the format as adoption increases. Pause ads might be highly effective for now, but that could be because they’re a relatively new CTV format. Tracking the scale of advertiser adoption and consumer sentiment will help marketers assess whether pause ads are maintaining their impact as it becomes more commonplace.
