The data: Quick-service restaurants are losing the value wars, per Industry KPI data from Placer.ai.
Traffic to QSRs fell 4.5% in May, marking the third straight month of YoY declines. That’s a notable reversal for a segment that typically benefits when consumers trade down, suggesting that even price-sensitive consumers are pulling back or finding better value elsewhere.
Meanwhile, fast-casual restaurants posted traffic growth in every month from June 2025 through May 2026 and consistently outperformed QSRs.
That divergence highlights a shift in how consumers define value. Rather than simply choosing the lowest price, many are opting for options that offer better perceived quality, customization, or portion size.
