The news: Major US banks are reportedly detecting third-party AI agents accessing customer accounts, with some appearing to act independently of customer instructions, per Axios.
In many cases, customers have given AI agents permission to access their accounts using their login credentials, despite bank policies prohibiting the practice. But banks are struggling to distinguish legitimate customer-directed activity from unauthorized agent behavior.
As a result, JPMorganChase, Bank of America, and others are taking steps to block third-party AI agents from accessing customer account information, citing security risks.
Why it matters: Blocking third-party agents helps banks limit immediate security risks, but it doesn't eliminate consumer demand for tools that can analyze spending, manage bills, or identify opportunities to earn higher returns on deposits.
And as more consumers delegate financial decisions to AI, banks that can’t safely accommodate those tools risk creating friction and losing influence over how consumers manage their money.
Recommendations for banks: Developing in-house chatbots and agents giving customers access to AI-powered financial tools while maintaining greater control over security and account activity. But building proprietary AI solutions requires significant investment, making it a less practical option for smaller financial institutions.
Banks without those resources should prioritize educating customers about the risks of granting third-party AI agents access to their accounts. That includes explaining what permissions customers are providing, what financial actions agents could take on their behalf, and how authorizing transactions or sharing login credentials could complicate fraud claims and reimbursement disputes.
