The data: Thirty-nine percent of US homeowners have mistakenly believed certain weather-related damage was covered by their insurance, and nearly half of that group ended up paying out of pocket for damages they thought were covered, according to Hippo Insurance's 2026 Extreme Weather Report.
Unexpected repairs are already putting pressure on household finances. Among homeowners who paid out of pocket, 22% are still carrying debt from the damage. Of those, 71% have carried that debt for at least two years.
Why it matters: Having homeowners insurance doesn't mean consumers are financially prepared to recover from weather damage.
Deductibles and uncovered damage can leave policyholders responsible for some or all of a repair, making understanding their coverage—and having money set aside for those repairs—an important part of weather preparedness.
Implications for insurers: Coverage confusion isn't just a financial preparedness problem for homeowners; it's a customer trust and retention risk for insurers. When policyholders discover that damage isn't covered after filing a claim, they may blame their insurer for the unexpected expense, even when the policy terms were disclosed.
Insurers can address that risk by making coverage education more timely and useful. While 85% of homeowners monitor local weather alerts, just 21% reviewed their insurance coverage as a preparedness step in the past year, per Hippo. That disconnect gives insurers an opportunity to reach customers when they're already thinking about weather risks but may not be considering their financial exposure.
Ahead of severe weather, insurers could pair practical prevention tips with clear explanations of relevant coverage, exclusions, and deductibles. Leading with useful guidance rather than a sales pitch could help insurers build trust, reduce unpleasant surprises during claims, and strengthen customer retention.
