The news: Citi and American Airlines refreshed the Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard, per a press release. The annual fee will rise from $595 to $695 on August 23, 2026.
American Airlines also raised the price of a standalone Admirals Club membership to $1,400, up from $850—making credit card-mediated access to lounges even more valuable.
Why this matters: Citi is pushing further upmarket after the Strata Elite launch’s success.
Last year, Citi’s premium card helped grow Citi's overall card portfolio by 38%, despite customer service snafus.
Implications for co-brand partners: To gain more payment value, travel co-brand issuers need to clearly differentiate their offerings to compete for top-of-wallet status: 17% of US adults hold travel co-brand cards, but only 7% use one as a primary card, per our US Cash Back Credit Card Emerging Features Benchmark.
Injecting these co-brand portfolios with reward categories outside of travel may encourage more cardholders to reach for co-brand cards more often—for example, Wyndham now offers 4x points on grocery and dining, in addition to travel-focused rewards.
This could help co-brand partners lock in Gen Zers, 61% of whom currently aren’t enrolled in airline loyalty programs due to lack of significant travel with one carrier or brand. Rewards on groceries or gas could tip their favor to a co-brand travel card.
