Trump’s tariffs keep retailers on edge

The news: The Trump administration is preparing a new slate of tariffs that could take effect as early as this week, according to the Financial Times. These duties would replace the current 10% blanket levy, which is due to expire at the end of the week, while reviving elements of the president’s “Liberation Day” trade agenda.

On top of those duties, the government announced separate tariffs on imports from Brazil and Canada.

  • Brazilian imports are now subject to a 25% tariff, though many goods—including beef, coffee, and orange juice—are exempt.
  • The administration also threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian imports starting in 30 days unless the two countries come to a trade agreement.

Why it matters: These new tariffs could add to the pain US consumers are feeling as they grapple with higher prices for fuel and other necessities. While it will take some time for tariff-related costs to trickle down to the consumer, the prospect of such increases could deepen pessimism around the state of the US economy and personal finances.

Most of the new duties are expected to be on par with the existing 10% global tariff—meaning little change to the status quo for retailers. Unlike the “Liberation Day” tariffs, these levies stand on firmer legal ground, making them more likely to become permanent fixtures of doing business in the US.

Implications for retailers: There are signs that the latest measures could be less disruptive than previous proposals. Officials are pursuing exemptions for consumer goods like food, apparel, and other “non-sensitive” products, which could reduce their effect on household budgets. At the same time, Trump’s decision to slap 50% tariffs on Canadian imports underscores how quickly US trade policy could change—and the need for retailers to build flexibility into their supply chains.
