SoFi's cross-selling machine makes every customer more valuable

The news: SoFi's existing members drove 51% of new product signups in Q2 2026, up from 35% a year earlier, the company said on its July 29 earnings call. SoFi added a record 1.1 million members and 2.2 million products in the quarter, pushing products per member to 1.54.

Zooming in: SoFi's path toward becoming a diversified financial platform depends on loan products, which generate the relationships that later expand into deposits, investing, credit cards, subscriptions, and other services.

  • Personal loan originations reached $10.7 billion in Q2, alongside $2.7 billion in student loans and $1.4 billion in home loans. Total originations hit a new high of $14.8 billion.
  • Adjusted net revenue rose 40% YoY to $1.2 billion, and for lending it grew 59% to $712 million.

Why it matters: The SoFi Plus premium membership program, relaunched in Q2, illustrates how the company’s cross-sell loop compounds. Of the roughly 206,000 subscribers at quarter end, 85% were already SoFi members, and 25% went on to open another product after subscribing, per the earnings call. Many of those members also increased deposits, assets under management, and spending with SoFi.

Implications for banks: SoFi's numbers show how cross-selling and its lower marginal cost of selling a second or third product to an existing member is a structural advantage over banks still spending heavily to win first accounts.

The same loop concentrates risk, since a member holding a loan, card, and deposit account exposes SoFi to a single credit event touching several products at once. Competing banks should watch whether SoFi's products per member keeps climbing alongside loan growth, since that metric is a key indicator of the strength of its growth engine.
