Reddit turns in-app search into an ad opportunity as external traffic falls

The news: Reddit is testing ads within its search results as it looks to capitalize on users’ product discovery and research behaviors, the company announced Tuesday.

  • Ads will appear directly in Reddit’s in-app search results and will be shown based on several factors, primarily contextual relevance to users’ queries. In one example, Reddit said a user could search “home office setup” and see ads for products like desks or office chairs.
  • Reddit is piloting the new placements with a select group of advertisers and did not indicate a timeline for a broader rollout.

Zooming out: The test follows Reddit’s disclosure that search referrals declined by over 1 million per week on average in October, driven by pressure from Google’s AI search features. Reddit isn’t the only one feeling that pressure. Google referral traffic declined 43% YoY between June 2025 and 2026 for large publishers and 59.8% for small publishers, signaling Google’s ability to shift search habits that have historically sustained the open web.

Search ads could help Reddit offset some of the revenue pressure associated with declining referral traffic, as platforms like Reddit face a growing need to generate more ad revenues from existing audiences rather than depending on external sources of traffic growth. Reddit previously emphasized growth in its search business, with the number of people searching on-site weekly growing 30% YoY in Q1.

Reddit’s recent decision to shift toward a logged-in experience also reflects that broader push to maximize its existing audience’s advertising value. The change will ideally turn more casual visitors into identifiable users who can be reached at key moments of product research and consideration.

Will it work? Reddit is leaning on the value of engaged users to keep marketers invested as traditional traffic declines. But the success of its expanded advertising efforts will depend partly on whether users continue engaging with Reddit as heavily as it introduces more ads into the browsing experience.

Reddit’s appeal as a source of authentic recommendations could be undermined if sponsored placements feel too intrusive. The move toward a logged-in experience also risks deterring casual visitors who may be unwilling to create accounts just to access content, especially if that content comes with high ad loads. That could further constrain audience growth on Reddit at a time when declining search referrals are already threatening its ability to attract large numbers of users.

Implications for marketers: Reddit’s move highlights growing competition for high-intent ad budgets beyond traditional search engines. Marketers should consider testing Reddit’s new search placements as they become available, particularly for products that benefit from consumer reviews and recommendations.

But marketers should also monitor whether increased ad loads affect user engagement or the quality of audiences being reached. Assessing whether the placements offer incremental conversions beyond existing search campaigns will help determine whether Reddit can compete more directly for search advertising budgets.
