The news: More than 700,000 seniors have started taking GLP-1 therapies since the Medicare Bridge program began covering the drugs for weight loss in July, and Eli Lilly says it’s captured 70% of those new patients, according to a CNBC interview with CEO Dave Ricks.
Why it matters: GLP-1 use among older adults is rising quickly as Medicare coverage expands and lowers patients’ costs. Under the Bridge program, eligible Medicare patients pay $50 per month for weight loss GLP-1s. From June to July, the share of adults ages 65+ prescribed GLP-1s grew 19%, per an August report from Truveta Research. That’s the largest single month over month increase it’s tracked.
A June KFF analysis estimates that 3.8 million Medicare beneficiaries meet the criteria for weight loss GLP-1 access through the Bridge program. Lilly puts the eligible population at a much higher number, estimating 20 million Medicare patients may meet the clinical criteria, Lilly said. Even against the lower estimate, more than 700,000 new patients in less than three months represents substantial early uptake.
Implications for pharma companies and healthcare providers: The surge of senior GLP-1 patients means pharma companies and providers are absorbing a large wave of users in a short period. That has created a new commercial opportunity for pharma and new demands on providers caring for older patients.
For pharma companies, Medicare coverage opens a new revenue stream: KFF estimates sales of $1.3 billion to $3.3 billion if 10% to 25% of seniors participate. But those older patients have distinct needs, such as preserving muscle and managing multiple conditions, which will need to be supported in order to get them to maintain usage. Pharma companies can offer tools that help clinicians identify muscle-loss risks, comorbidities, and potential drug interactions, alongside senior-specific patient programs with tailored education and guidance.
For providers, the challenge is scaling care as demand grows: CVS filled 100,000 prescriptions as of mid-August, while Walgreens reported higher uptake than expected, per NPR. Health systems can build senior-specific GLP-1 workflows that assess muscle mass, physical fitness, and nutrition before treatment and set individualized protein goals and resistance training targets to help maintain muscle mass during weight loss.
