Nubank uses partner bank to get a head start on US expansion

The news: Nu Holdings launched a high-yield deposit account, a credit card, and a remittance service through a partner bank rather than waiting for its own national charter, per Reuters.

  • The Nu Account pays 3.50% APY with no minimum balance, rising to 4.50% on up to $10,000 for customers who also hold the Nu Credit Card and make three qualifying transactions within 34 days.
  • Nu Global converts deposits into USDC or EURC stablecoins, paying 3.50% APY on dollar balances and 2.20% on euro balances, with free transfers across more than 35 countries.

The Brazil-based company also introduced Nu Global, a stablecoin-powered multi-currency account for customers who move money across borders.

Why this matters: Nu received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January to form a national bank but won’t be fully operational for more than a year.

To speed up its US entry, Nu partnered with Lead Bank, a Kansas City-based institution that also sponsors Stripe and Visa's stablecoin card platform, per Neobanque.

Nu also arrives with significant scale behind it. The company has more than 139 million customers globally and posted more than $1 billion in net income last quarter—making it Mexico's largest digital bank.

Implications for digital banks: Nu is using a savings rate boost to encourage customers to open its credit card and transact regularly, while cash back gives them another reason to move the card toward the top of their wallets. The target isn’t simply account acquisition—it is a deeper, more active relationship spanning deposits, payments, and cross-border transfers.

More importantly, Nu can use Lead Bank to establish its brand, test demand, and refine its products now before it brings those operations—and revenues—in-house. That makes a bank charter a second-stage economics play rather than a prerequisite for market entry—a blueprint other international digital banks could follow to enter the US.
