The news: Meta’s legal woes are piling up this week with an antitrust fine from the European Commission (EC) and the reopening of a 2020 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) case that was initially dismissed in 2021.
The EC fined Meta €797.7 million ($863.2 million) for “unfairly” tying its Facebook and Facebook Marketplace businesses together. It also ordered Meta to change its business conduct, though it didn’t specify what changes need to be made.
The FTC antitrust lawsuit over Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp could go to trial before the end of the year.
