Meta is counting on the Trump administration to fight back against EU restrictions

The news: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other company executives have asked US officials to push back against the EU for an expected fine and cease-and-desist order, The Wall Street Journal reports.

  • The penalties relate to Meta’s attempt to offer an ad-free subscription in the EU. The European Commission (EC) sued Meta over the offering, which it says created a “pay or consent” model that violated the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by denying consumers a fair choice between existing services and a model that collects less personalized data.
  • Companies found in violation of the DMA could be fined as much as 10% of their global annual turnover—though the Financial Times reports that the EC could soften its penalty to avoid conflict with the Trump administration.
