EU extends addictive algorithm enforcement to Snap, YouTube

The news: The European Commission asked TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube on Wednesday for details about their content recommendations systems as it continues to enforce the Digital Services Act (DSA).

  • The Commission is seeking information on how YouTube and Snapchat’s “recommender systems” work, citing concerns about their impact on civic discourse, electoral misinformation, users’ mental health (including addictive behavior and “rabbit holes”), and the protection of minors.
  • TikTok was asked to explain how it is protecting users from malicious actors and warding off election misinformation and interference.
