Disney+ and Hulu bring iHeartMedia podcasts into the streaming mix

The news: Disney+ and Hulu will start streaming six video podcasts from iHeartMedia on both platforms as part of a new licensing agreement, the companies announced Monday.

Podcasts set to be available on the streaming services include “Hey Jonas!,” hosted by the Jonas Brothers, and “Pod Meets World,” hosted by actors from “Boy Meets World.” Both will appear on Disney+ later this month, with more video podcasts planned for the fall.

The new podcasts add to Disney+ and Hulu’s current offering of 30 podcasts available for US audiences. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The trend: Rival streaming platforms are similarly pushing into the video podcast space.

  • Netflix made a major move last year with a Spotify partnership that brought a selection of video podcasts to the streaming service. Netflix also has a daily livestreamed podcast in partnership with iHeartMedia for “The Breakfast Club,” which officially began streaming on weekdays in June.
  • HBO Max offers companion and rewatch video podcasts related to its original content.

Video podcasts on the rise: Streaming platforms have an opportunity to attract new audiences as video podcast consumption continues to grow.
