Creator-brand tensions put authentic influencer content at risk

The news: Creators are struggling to balance audience preferences with brand demands, according to CreatorIQ’s State of Creators study.

  • More than 4 in 10 (42%) creators agree that they feel tension between the content audiences want them to make and the content brands ask of them. Only 19% disagreed with this sentiment.
  • The challenge was more pronounced among creators with over 500,000 Instagram followers, with 53% reporting this push and pull.

The data suggests that creators face growing pressure to satisfy brand expectations without compromising the authenticity that resonates with their audiences.

Why it matters: Brands increasingly rely on influencers to reach audiences through content that feels authentic, but overly prescriptive brand demands can undermine the authenticity that makes creator partnerships valuable in the first place.

  • 40% of creators look for brands that allow product trials to ensure authenticity, per a November 2025 Snapchat, Publicis Media, and Ipsos report.
  • Authenticity matters more than positivity in creator reviews. Thirty-four percent of social users are more likely to purchase based on an authentic creator review, whether positive or negative, per EMARKETER/impact.com.
  • Authenticity was the top factor to increase social media users’ trust in influencer product recommendations in a 2024 IZEA survey at 68% of respondents, above recommendation history (54.1%) and product demonstration (51.5%).

But CreatorIQ’s findings suggest that brands risk the very quality that makes creator partnerships effective when their expectations stray too far from what resonates with creators’ audiences.

When creators reshape their content around brand demands, sponsored posts can feel transactional or disconnected from their usual voice, signaling to audiences that they’re fulfilling a brief rather than sharing a genuine perspective.

Recommendations for brands: Choose influencers based on brand fit first. Creators whose content naturally aligns with a brand—for instance, beauty influencers partnering with a makeup brand—will be better positioned to drive users to action because sponsored content can feel more authentic and consistent with audience expectations.

Brands should also be willing to give influencers more creative control. Giving creators room to apply their own perspective and expertise can make sponsored content feel more natural to their audiences while building the trust needed for stronger, longer-term partnerships.
