The news: Cloudflare debuted Wallets on Tuesday, a programmable payment system that lets AI agents sign up for APIs, prove who they’re spending on behalf of, and pay for content or access without the need for human oversight.
With Cloudflare’s Wallets, every account gets two wallet types.
An agency could fund one Account Wallet and hand every campaign a Virtual Wallet capped at $200 a week for real-time bid verification and audience data pulls, with unusual spend flagged for manual review rather than blocked outright.
Zooming in: In June, Cloudflare found that bots now generate 57% of internet traffic, per Mashable, surpassing human web traffic. “Welp, that happened faster than I predicted,” CEO Matthew Prince said. Now his company is addressing that traffic directly.
For ad tech and martech applications, ad verification, audience data, attribution queries, and demand-side platforms (DSP), API calls can now be sold directly to machine or agentic buyers. These agentic purchases can be processed in cent-level increments that traditional card checkout systems don’t accommodate. This unlocks micro-transactions and real-time programmatic efficiency at scale.
Cloudflare says Wallets can eliminate the hoops AI agents need to jump through to try out new APIs. They often have to navigate through a login page designed for humans, contact a human to add a payment method, generate an API key, and then figure out how to call the API.
Implications for brands: Agents are quickly becoming a prime buying audience, and that changes how marketers should think about acquisition and targeting.
