YouTube throws hat in the ring for Academy Awards streaming rights

The news: YouTube has made an official inquiry about purchasing the rights to future Academy Awards ceremonies in its latest live events push, per Bloomberg. The move comes after viewership increased slightly for the most recent Oscars ceremony, driven by simultaneous airing on ABC and Hulu.

YouTube’s live events strategy: Vying for the Oscars is another step in YouTube’s shift toward live events.

  • Most notably, YouTube recently secured exclusive rights to the first NFL game of the 2025 season while expanding its NFL Sunday Ticket rights, marking the first time an NFL game will be streamed on YouTube for free.
  • And beyond the NFL, YouTube has been making a name for itself in the live sports arena, airing games from major leagues like the NBA and MLB on its main YouTube platform and YouTube TV.
