For years, discovery meant a search bar and a list of blue links. But now that time is spent on a growing reliance on AI chat, where consumers ask questions, compare options, and decide what to buy without ever touching a traditional results page.

Nearly one in five people have made a purchase based on an AI recommendation without verifying it through search first, according to a March 2026 EMARKETER and Publicis Commerce survey.

That trust extends beyond one-off purchases: 54.5% of US consumers say a strong AI suggestion influences their decision-making, per a June 2026 Amperity survey. And more than half (51.7%) of consumers say a generative AI suggestion has introduced them to brands or websites that were previously off their radar, the EMARKETER/Publicis Commerce survey found.

Collectively, these numbers point to something more than a passing trend. AI now owns the full decision journey for many purchases, and that changes what brand visibility has been known to mean.

While traditional search offered advertisers one engagement opportunity per session, AI chat provides several touchpoints within a single conversation, surfacing naturally inside follow-up questions and comparisons. In this case, lower click volume doesn’t equate to diminished potential. Instead, these moments of influence have intensified, becoming contextually integrated into one conversation rather than being diluted across a series of disconnected search results.

The opportunity extends to publishers too. New ad formats are emerging within the chat experience, some appearing inline within the AI-generated response, others positioned adjacent to it, above, below, or alongside the answer. Together, these placements open revenue streams that didn't exist two years ago. For publishers already navigating declining search referral traffic, this is meaningful to both maintain daily active users and as a source of revenue growth.

This evolution isn’t waiting on the horizon. Live campaigns are already integrated into AI chat and discovery surfaces today, and the early movers who prioritize building within this ecosystem are securing a distinct competitive edge, gaining critical insights and benchmarks before the landscape becomes saturated.

That headstart only goes so far, as no individual advertiser or publisher possesses a total view of consumer intent across these emerging AI surfaces. Because these intent signals are currently fragmented across various browsers, shopping apps, and chat interfaces, the path toward a unified understanding requires working across a breadth of partners rather than a reliance on a single platform.

As search volume shifts toward conversation, the ability to aggregate intent across publishers will separate those who understand this new layer from those still catching up.
