TikTok courts microdrama viewers as brands seek new repeat-exposure formats

The news: TikTok has partnered with Made By Us Studios to bring microdrama series from notable creators to the platform.

TikTok will gain exclusive rights to select series across TikTok and PineDrama, its dedicated microdrama app.

Zooming out: TikTok’s push to make microdramas a distinct content category comes as the genre is surging in popularity.

  • The number of US microdrama viewers on dedicated microdrama apps alone will more than double between 2026 and 2028, per our forecast, reaching 10.8 million.
  • US daily mobile viewing time on microdrama apps like ReelShort now exceeds that of Netflix, Disney, and Prime Video, per Sensor Tower data.
  • Short dramas have experienced a 95.5% YoY app download growth, the highest across app categories including entertainment, education, and utilities, per an August Mintegral report.
  • Short dramas were the only app category to more than double YoY in both active advertisers (132%) and ad creative output (151%).

Why it matters: For brands, the surge in microdramas represents a relatively new opportunity to enforce brand messaging through habitual, repeat viewing that commands strong time spent and offers numerous exposure windows.

And the opportunities to participate in the trend are vast: Strategies range from fully branded microdramas to product placements and rewarded ads for users to unlock more episodes.

Recommendations for marketers:

  • Build brand integrations around the storyline. Explore product placements and recurring appearances that fit into a series to foster repeat exposure that doesn’t interrupt the viewing experience.
  • Test different levels of investment before going all in. Lighter-touch integrations like product placements and rewarded ads offer lower-commitment ways to test the microdrama format before considering fully branded series. Tests can determine whether a larger investment makes sense.
  • Consider TikTok’s moves as an opportunity to test the genre. With microdramas spanning both TikTok and PineDrama, and TikTok’s established strength in vertical video, brands can test how placements and sponsored episodes perform across viewing environments before committing to a broader strategy.
  • Measure beyond engagement. Microdramas are a relatively new marketing surface compared with the broader digital video ecosystem. Determine whether repeat exposure translates into consistently stronger brand recall, consideration, or conversions.
