Revolut can’t build brand recognition with a signature scent

The news: Revolut is looking for a scent branding agency to create a signature fragrance, according to Gareth Morgan, the fintech's head of global brand design.

Revolut wants to translate the brand into "something unexpected, memorable and unmistakably ours," per a LinkedIn post.

Zooming out: Banks have already started building scent into their brand identities, per Finextra.

  • China Merchant Bank worked with Air Aroma to develop two exclusive scents for its branches.
  • And Standard Chartered built a "fully integrated sensory identity," combining fragrance, music, and spatial atmosphere into a China and Hong Kong branch revamp.

Revolut's scent search follows a broader push into owned physical space. The fintech picked Barcelona for its first physical location, an Apple store-like flagship branch, earlier this year. It's also building a network of branded airport lounges across major European destinations, starting with Copenhagen next year.

Implications for banks: Scent branding works because consumers are more likely to remember what they smell than what they see, hear, or touch, according to Mood Media.

Pairing a scent with an airport lounge and the Barcelona flagship location lets Revolut build a consistent sensory identity across its limited owned spaces.

But Revolut's limited physical footprint could constrain the strategy's impact. Scent branding relies on repeated exposure and positive associations to build recognition. With most customer interactions still happening digitally, Revolut may struggle to create enough opportunities for customers to encounter its fragrance and associate it with the brand. Until its physical presence expands, the scent risks being more of a novelty than a meaningful driver of brand recognition.
