Perplexity’s new ad pokes fun at Google AI in an effort to gain market share

The news: AI-startup Perplexity has launched an ad featuring “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae taking a jab at Google AI in an effort to draw market share away from the AI leader.

  • The ad features Jung-jae trapped in a “Squid-Game”-esque scenario, where he turns to the “Poogle” app to assist his escape—and gets a list of unhelpful links in response. The actor then uses Perplexity instead and receives a step-by-step answer that allows him to escape.
  • Poking fun at Google, Jung-jae asks Perplexity “How do I make cheese stick to pizza?” while Perplexity responds, “Don’t use glue,” a clear reference to a previous mistake from Google’s AI Overviews.
