The news: After launching in January with a limited test group, “Health in ChatGPT” is now rolling out to all eligible US users ages 18+ across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. The new feature is rebranded from "ChatGPT Health" and lives inside the main ChatGPT experience rather than a separate workspace.
Health in ChatGPT lets eligible iOS users share medical records and health app and wearable data synced through Apple Health with ChatGPT. Users can also connect medical records from participating US health systems, One Medical, and Function Health, allowing ChatGPT to take context from user-shared health data, doctor’s visits, and lab results in its health guidance.
Why it matters: Health is already one of ChatGPT's biggest use cases, with more than 300 million people asking health-related questions each week, according to OpenAI. Among consumers who use AI for health information, 84% use ChatGPT, well ahead of the next most-used tool, Gemini (49%), per EMARKETER’s January 2026 US Digital Health survey.
However, early testing of Health in ChatGPT (at the time, ChatGPT Health) has exposed instances of unreliable medical advice. In a study of 60 clinical scenarios, ChatGPT missed about 52% of cases that physicians classified as emergencies, often advising patients to stay home instead of seeking urgent care. It also inconsistently triggered 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline alerts, sometimes flagging low-risk scenarios while failing to respond to users describing self-harm plans.
Implications for AI companies and healthcare providers: Consumers may not yet be comfortable sharing sensitive medical records with tools like ChatGPT. Among ChatGPT users who turn to the tool for health, 34% have never uploaded health information, compared with 17% who have uploaded bloodwork and 11% who have uploaded prescriptions, according to an April Tebra survey. The gap suggests that specific medical record-linking features may see slower adoption than AI for general health information.
OpenAI and other general-purpose AI platforms rolling out consumer health products may struggle to earn that added layer of trust. Established healthcare organizations are increasingly deploying AI tools that combine patient data with physician-backed guidance—and consumers inherently trust providers more than tech companies. For AI companies, the challenge is balancing the opportunity to make health a sticky, high-frequency use case with the need to be exceptionally transparent about the limits of their AI-generated medical guidance.
