The news: Meta is blocking ByteDance, parent company of TikTok, from advertising on its platforms. The restriction applies to seven countries, including the US and Canada, and extends to third-party advertiser campaigns that link to TikTok or other ByteDance properties, per Bloomberg.
Meta framed the decision as standard competitive behavior and stated that it will continue to compete on product quality and UX. “We don’t have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps,” Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro said.
