The news: Meta opened up Facebook Marketplace to third-party classified ad sellers in the EU. The move stems from a November European Commission mandate (and fine of nearly €800 million) that prevents the company from tying its Marketplace classified ads business to Facebook.
Previously, companies that wanted to buy ads on Marketplace had to commit some amount of spending to Facebook.
While the change will likely result in less spending on Facebook as a result, Meta will still be able to control Marketplace ad prices.
