As Google scrambles to monetize AI search, trust and ROI concerns mount

The news: Google is accelerating its efforts to monetize generative search. At Google Marketing Live, the company announced that ads will now appear in AI Mode—its experimental conversational interface for search—as well as in AI Overviews on mobile and desktop, and in third-party AI chatbots. The new placements are contextually aligned with commercial queries, such as shopping and business-related prompts.

CEO Sundar Pichai framed the shift as a “reimagining of search” at Google I/O, highlighting growing pressure to modernize amid rising competition from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
