Google’s €1.49 billion EU fine annulled, but antitrust challenges continue

The news: The EU’s General Court annulled a €1.49 ($1.61) billion antitrust fine imposed on Google following an appeal from the Big Tech company.

  • The fine was imposed by the European Commission (EC) in 2019 and concerned alleged exclusivity clauses in Google’s ad contracts that let it control how rivals’ search ads appear online.
  • According to Google, those provisions were removed from contracts in 2016 and only involved a small number of publishers’ websites.
