Disney’s Super Bowl play puts streaming’s mass-reach promise to the test

The news: Disney+ will stream Super Bowl LXI next year, the first time the House of Mouse has held the game in two decades, per Adweek. Its broadcast will reach more than 55 international markets in both English and Spanish.

This update follows comments from Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro that he wants Disney+ to serve as the company’s “digital centerpiece.” He added that “beyond our films and series, Disney+ will continue to evolve, bringing together games, merchandise, and other experiences … designed to deepen engagement, improve the value proposition, lower churn, and most importantly, increase lifetime fan value.”

Zooming out: Getting in on the Super Bowl could help Disney push further into sports and expand its international reach. Viewership for the Super Bowl has remained steady in recent years, dipping only slightly to 125.6 million in 2026 from 127.7 million in 2025, per Nielsen. That’s up from 115.1 million in 2023.
