Disney is bringing Star Wars back in a changed media landscape

The news: Disney plans to release a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films, the first since 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” marking a return to theaters for one of its tentpole franchises.

Star Wars has been a lucrative film franchise for Disney. The most recent trilogy grossed $4.4 billion in the box office against a combined budget of $1.1 billion. But a new trilogy would arrive in a vastly changed film and streaming ecosystem that will affect how its fortunes play out.

Is there fatigue? While Star Wars films have all turned a profit, the franchise has taken a troubled turn. When returning CEO Bob Iger ousted former CEO Bob Chapek, one of his criticisms of Chapek’s tenure was that the company had diluted interest in its major franchises by overindexing on them.
