ChatGPT’s ad tech stack is catching up to advertiser demand, but transparency gaps remain

The news: OpenAI teamed up with DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS), along with other third-party providers, to bring independent measurement to ChatGPT ads and improve brand safety evaluation.

  • DV's attribution measurement lets advertisers measure ChatGPT ad performance within their broader attribution measurement framework, to assess the platform’s impact in comparison with other marketing channels.
  • Double Verify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS) are developing a brand risk and suitability evaluation pilot to help advertisers decide if placements inside AI conversations match their brand preferences and guidelines, with the goal of preserving conversation privacy.

“Together, attribution and brand suitability measurement will address two fundamental advertiser needs: understanding the business impact of their investment and gaining greater confidence in the context in which their brands appear,” OpenAI and DV stated in a press release.

What it means: OpenAI’s latest partnerships could help ChatGPT’s ad tech stack catch up to advertiser demand for capabilities like prompt-level reporting and deeper conversion insights. Buyers told Adweek that basic click metrics aren’t enough to evaluate a channel where consumers can research products and make decisions without leaving the platform.

By looking at ChatGPT ad performance alongside other customer journey touchpoints, OpenAI could close that measurement gap and establish ChatGPT as a more mature ad channel. Added measurement features could also help support OpenAI’s ambitious ad revenue goals.

However, measurement is only part of the equation—marketers still lack prompt-level visibility into why ads appear.

Implications for advertisers: Proving that a ChatGPT ad led to a conversion could help justify spending on the format, and explaining why an ad appeared and whether its context was appropriate will help ease brand safety concerns.

The risk and suitability pilot could provide a transparency compromise by translating conversational context into privacy-safe data. Advertisers and measurement partners can use this to evaluate ad efficacy without seeing users’ conversations—a privacy concern that OpenAI needs to address to maintain trust and encourage continued adoption.
