Aldi plans to open 180 US stores this year

The news: Aldi is making a major push to attract more shoppers—both online and offline.

The details:

  • The value-oriented grocer plans to open more than 180 stores this year across 31 states, bringing its footprint to nearly 2,800 US locations and moving it closer to its goal of 3,200 stores by the end of 2028. That comes on the heels of the retailer opening more than 225 US stores this year—including in Midtown Manhattan.
  • Aldi also plans to launch a redesigned website with tailored product recommendations, expanded nutritional information, shoppable recipes, and meal-planning tools. The site will also help ensure curbside customers see items available at their local store. Shoppers can also opt for home delivery via partnerships with Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats.
  • Aldi plans to open distribution centers in Colorado, Florida, and Arizona to support the growth.

Implications for retailers: Aldi is one of several value-focused grocers ramping up expansion as consumers become increasingly cost-conscious.

  • While grocery prices rose just 1.9% YoY in November, persistent inflation and a challenging macroeconomic climate have shoppers laser-focused on value.
  • Those pressures are pushing many budget-conscious consumers to look for ways to lower their grocery bills. Nearly half (49%) are trading down to cheaper brands at their current store, while 31% are switching to lower-priced grocers, per Alvarez & Marsal.

Convenience remains one of the most influential factors in where consumers buy groceries. By expanding its footprint and strengthening its digital capabilities, Aldi is positioned to capture additional share.
