Share of Demographic Representation on TV Shows, 2019 (% share of screen time and % of total population)

Methodology

Data is from a December 2020 Nielsen report titled "Being Seen on Screen: Diverse Representation & Inclusion on TV." Data is from a Nielsen analysis of "share of screen," defined as identity group (e.g., women, LGBTQ, Hispanic) representation among the top 10 recurring cast members of TV shows. Data for "share of screen" includes analysis of linear first-run episodes of the top 100 broadcast and top 100 cable programs, as ranked by adults ages 18+ and Nielsen's Live+7 ratings during 2019. Additionally, the top 100 subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) programs and top 10 programs from broadcast, cable, and SVOD for Hispanic, Black, and Asian people were analyzed. Linear and SVOD sports, movies, and animation, as well as programs with fewer than 5 telecasts were excluded. Television data are derived from Nielsen's National TV Panel that is based on a sample of over 45,000 homes; homes are selected based on area probability sampling. Live and timeshifted TV includes live usage plus any playback viewing within the measurement period. Data is weighted using episode occurrence at the program level. It is additionally weighted by minutes viewed at the genre and platform level.
