YouTube discovery rises as shorter attention cuts ad potential

The news: YouTube is now an algorithm-first discovery engine where reach is abundant but sustained attention is often scarce.

Long-form video views are up 76% YoY, but average view duration is down 37% and engagement has declined 45%, per Metricool’s 2026 YouTube Study. Ad impressions are also down 51%, showing that more views aren’t driving positive advertising outcomes.

Shorts saw even more dramatic growth, with views spiking 127% YoY and brands’ posting frequency rising by over 20%. Attention is also disappearing for short-form, though, as view duration and interactions declined 67% and 15%, respectively.

Organic views are overwhelmingly driven by YouTube’s own recommendation engines: 61% of all organic views come from the Shorts feed, followed by subscribers (11%) and YouTube search (9%). Only 3% of users actively go to a creator’s channel to find content.

Digging in: YouTube’s base of US video viewers exceeds entire streaming and TV categories, per our data, making it a crucial platform to access users. However, it’s behaving more like a recommendation engine optimized for discovery and quick consumption than one designed for deep viewing, which could cause advertisers to question their spend.

If viewers abandon videos earlier, fewer mid-roll ads are triggered, resulting in lost impressions. And while Shorts are becoming more effective at distribution, attention is a challenge.

With most people finding content because YouTube promotes it, optimizing for recommendation engines may be more important than growing subscriber counts.

Recommendations for brands: Because people are finding more videos but leaving them sooner, quality of watch time becomes more valuable than raw reach. High view counts don’t guarantee sustained audience engagement, requiring brands to focus on quick conversions and brand-building moments.

  • Invest in attention-grabbing openings, clear CTAs, concise messaging, and formats that encourage users to stick around.
  • Monitor metrics like watch time, retention, and conversion to see where visibility is producing engagement and whether long- or short-form video is best suited for brand goals.
