YouTube’s AI citation lead makes video a bigger piece of GEO strategy

The news: As the leading source of citations for the eight most-popular AI assistants, YouTube is turning into a crucial element of generative engine optimization (GEO) strategies, per Meltwater.

  • Despite a 7.3% month-over-month (MoM) decrease in citations in August, YouTube continued to lead AI engine appearances with a 26% visibility score. Google’s AI products cited it the most.
  • Reddit, whose visibility score dropped just under 1% to 19%, landed in second place.
  • Meanwhile, LinkedIn’s citation volume jumped upward 24.8% MoM to give it a 16% visibility score for third place.

YouTube is in a unique position as the sole video platform in the top rankings.

What it means: Marketers have traditionally focused on YouTube in terms of views, watch time, subscribers, and creator reach, but now they also need to consider if their content has the kind of authoritative and structured information that AI systems can understand and index.

This new reality means video strategy, creator strategy, SEO, and GEO need to work together. That’s especially important when content is meant to answer high-intent user queries like “What’s the best product for this use case?” or “How do these brands compare?”

Recommendations for brands: YouTube is a strong part of the information layer that AI systems draw from and direct users toward, meaning GEO strategies should expand beyond written content.

  • Invest in videos for product explainers and comparisons, guides, FAQ content, and tutorials that give AI systems informational material.
  • Make YouTube content machine-readable through clear titles, accurate transcriptions, timestamps, or captions.
  • Make short- and long-form video content to help feed AI answers and surface as a source in AI chats.
  • Work with subject-matter experts who can explain products or categories with authority, which could have value beyond their immediate audiences if that content becomes an AI source.
