X shifts creator payouts from Stripe to X Money, betting on high APRs to retain funds

The news: Creator payouts on X will now flow through X Money instead of Stripe, per a company statement

How we got here: X Money has been a long time in the making.

Announced in 2023, the app targeted launch dates in 2024 and then 2025. A limited rollout began in June 2026.

Why this matters: With creator payouts, X Money can snag a captive audience for a major chunk of acquisitions—and volume. We forecast that across all social, platform payouts make up the second biggest revenue stream for creators after sponsored content at $5 billion.

X Money is also betting on big yields to capture users: Creators can earn up to 6% annual percentage yield (APY) on stored funds, clearing the most competitive high-yield savings account rates. This can sweeten the deal for content creators forced to participate in X Money, and convince more of them to keep their funds stored on the budding super app.

Implications for fintechs: Strong rewards can get users in the door, but a culture of trust and security can get them to stay. For players like X Money, which faced hacking attacks after its launch, users may not trust keeping funds on the super app.

Emphasizing security measures like biometrics or two-factor authentication to access accounts can help reassure members to take advantage of in-app rewards, instead of sticking with an incumbent.
