The news: The European Commission (EC) is accusing X of failing to rein in disinformation and harmful content and could fine the social media giant $1 billion.

  • The punishment, based on alleged violations of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), could ignite further tensions with President Donald Trump amid a developing trade war.
  • The penalties are expected to be announced this summer and could include a demand for product changes, per The New York Times. X could still avoid fines if it agrees to revisions that satisfy the EC’s concerns.
