OpenAI has rapidly expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities as it seeks to create what the company dubs a “super assistant” that plays a significant role in users’ daily digital lives. But it’s not following Asia’s super app playbook. Instead, ChatGPT is pursuing an interface-led approach that addresses the West’s biggest pain point: too much choice rather than too little. The real test is whether that’s enough to earn it the coveted super app status, or whether—like its Western rivals—it’s still falling short.
