Voice assistants are most popular AI-powered smartphone feature among adults

Key stat: Over a quarter (26%) of US adults currently or plan to use AI-powered voice assistants on their smartphones, the most popular AI feature among adults, according to a September 2024 survey from YouGov. However, even more (45%) don’t use or plan to use any AI-powered smartphone features at all.

Beyond the chart:

  • Half of the 133.3 million smartphone users in the US will use a voice assistant this year, per our forecast.
  • Younger consumers are more likely to use or intend to use AI features on their smartphones. This year, we forecast 31.1 million Gen Zers and 33.6 million millennials will use generative AI this year, outpacing Gen Xers (20.6 million) and baby boomers (10.2 million).

Use this chart: Marketers and retailers can use this chart to highlight how younger consumers are early adopters of AI-powered features or demonstrate the importance of education among older consumers to familiarize them with AI tools.

Related EMARKETER reports:

Methodology: Data is from a September 2024 YouGov analysis as cited in a company blog. 1,221 US adults ages 18+ were surveyed online during September 23-24, 2024. Figures are weighted to reflect population estimates from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, and region.
