U.S. Bank joins the growing list of banks offering in-demand security features

The news: U.S. Bank launched Protect 360—an identity, privacy, and credit monitoring service available through its mobile app and online banking platform, per a press release.

Protect 360 is available in two tiers:

  • Essentials (free): Customers can monitor changes to their credit profiles, receive alerts when personal information appears on data broker sites, identify potential exposure of sensitive information, and get guidance on removing it.
  • Premium ($9.99 per month): Eligible checking and savings customers can upgrade to automated personal information removal and up to $1 million in identity theft protection coverage.

Why it matters: U.S. Bank is extending its role beyond protecting customers' accounts and transactions to safeguarding their broader digital identities. That creates opportunities to strengthen banking relationships while generating recurring subscription revenues.

The free tier adds value to U.S. Bank's checking and savings relationships, potentially making those accounts more attractive. The paid tier monetizes demand for more comprehensive protection without requiring customers to open additional financial products.

U.S. Bank also has a distribution advantage over standalone identity protection providers. It can market Protect 360 directly to customers through its mobile app and online banking platform, potentially reducing customer acquisition costs.

Zooming out: U.S. Bank isn't alone in expanding beyond traditional account security.

  • Amex offers CreditSecure, a $19.99-a-month identity protection service with credit monitoring, personal information removal assistance, and identity theft insurance.
  • JPMorgan Chase and Capital One offer free identity monitoring tools through Credit Journey and CreditWise, respectively.

As more financial institutions offer these protections, identity monitoring alone becomes less of a competitive differentiator. And consumer demand makes more comprehensive security features key to the overall banking experience.

Implications for banks: Alerts and security features dominate EMARKETER's emerging features benchmark—58% of US mobile banking users call unusual account activity alerts extremely valuable, and 53% said the same about the ability to check whether their Social Security number has been breached.
