United tries time-sensitive travel promotions to boost cardholder bookings

The news: United is hosting five days’ worth of exclusive deals for United Chase cardholders beginning August 4.

  • Each day will have its own exclusive, time-sensitive international travel offer.
  • Cardholders will have the chance to fly one way to a mystery location for only 30,000 miles (plus about $35 in taxes and fees).

What we know: While trip details only arrive the day of the promotion, United injects long-term intrigue into their promotion by teasing a large geographic location for each deal. Their website currently hints that cardholders can “visit somewhere specific in the Pacific.”

Redeeming 30,000 miles per trip could be a huge steal: Per UpgradedPoints, a typical flight from San Francisco to Sydney (to pick one location in the Pacific) would require 55,000 points—a discounted fare of 45% for cardholders.

Why this kind of promotion? United is trying to combat sluggish travel sales as US consumers remain anxious about their spending.

  • 20% of US adults say they’ve traveled or will travel less due to the economy, per a May survey by The Points Guy and The Harris Poll.
  • The average summer travel budget among US adults slid 25.4% since 2024, per a Europ Assistance survey.

Our take: United and its competitors are looking for ways to reverse slumping sales. Targeting international and premium products, while also strengthening its loyalty program, could be a sage way to turn things around.

As reflected in earnings from issuers like American Express, front-of-cabin sales are thriving, as wealthier US adults still have the means and desire to fly internationally. Big points promotions could help bolster back-of-cabin sales for cardholders who wish to fly but face budgetary restraints.
