The news: Chinese beauty company Proya Cosmetics will make its US debut in November in partnership with Ulta Beauty, per The Wall Street Journal. The brand’s skincare products will be available on the retailer’s ecommerce platforms and at 400 stores.
What it means: The partnership could be the start of a “C-beauty” wave, as several factors create an opening for Chinese brands.
Growing interest in Asian beauty brands. US consumers’ familiarity with K-beauty could ease the way for C-beauty brands to make inroads, especially if they can deliver a similar combination of affordability, quality, and innovation.
Specialty retailers’ need to differentiate. Stiffer competition from Amazon and TikTok Shop’s rise up the beauty retailer rankings are putting pressure on companies like Ulta and Sephora to find new brands and categories to protect their shopper appeal. Moving quickly on C-beauty could enable Ulta to stake an early claim to category authority.
China’s weak economy. Proya’s US expansion is gaining urgency as the company faces softening sales in its home market, with revenues falling 2.3% YoY and profits down 6.1% in Q1. Tepid retail sales growth of just 0.6% YoY in July shows that consumers remain extremely unwilling to spend, forcing companies to engage in costly price wars to drive sales and giving them incentive to look abroad.
Implications for beauty: It may take time for C-beauty to replicate K-beauty’s traction in the US. While K-beauty benefits from strong interest in South Korea’s other cultural exports, including K-pop and K-dramas, Chinese brands face PR challenges, such as geopolitical tensions and perceptions of poor quality. But tactics like social media campaigns, trained store associates, and US-focused marketing alongside broader US distribution could help turn C-beauty into the next beauty category to watch.
